The Center for Middle Eastern Studies and other participating Harvard research centers are accepting applications for summer travel, research, and study. To apply for the awards currently available through CMES (details below), please complete the CARAT application form online. Our application process calls for the following materials to be submitted through the CARAT website along with the CARAT-generated application form by the deadline above, with no exceptions (letters should be submitted separately, by the deadline as instructed below): 

  • Proposal of no more than 750 words outlining the project you hope to undertake and the rationale for pursuing it in your destination(s)
  • Current 1 page resume
  • Current transcript
  • 2 letters of recommendation (Letters should be sent as PDFs to lbritt@fas.harvard.edu with subject line "CARAT Recommendation for Student's Name" or delivered to CMES, Attn: Lucy Britt, 38 Kirkland St, Cambridge.)

Henry Rosovsky J-Term & Summer Fellowships For Undergraduate Research in Israel

Award Amount: average $2,500

Description of Award:
Each year, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies offers fellowships to a limited number of Harvard undergraduates for J-Term or summer research and/or field work in Israel. Awards are made to Harvard students undertaking projects directly related to their senior honors thesis. Students are required to submit a three- to five-page proposal, outlining the research question, research sites, and the resources to be used, as well as the relevant training of the applicant, including language skills, etc. The amount of the award will be approximately $2,000-$3,000. For application materials contact the OCS Fellowships Office. Applicants may consult Dr. Susan Kahn at skahn@fas.harvard.edu for additional information. Upon the completion of the study sponsored by this grant, students are required to present a two- to five-page report on their study/research to the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, including an accounting of how the funds were spent.

Description of Award:
The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University announces a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for a Harvard undergraduate who will enroll in a full time intensive summer program in Arabic. Absolute beginners will not be considered. Preference will be given to students who study the Arab world and have at least one full year of formal Arabic here at Harvard. Upon the completion of the study sponsored by this grant, the student is required to present a two- to five-page report on their study/research, to Dr. Granara at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, including an accounting of how the funds were spent.
