We are always evaluating and expanding our list of online resources. These sites have proven very useful to educators over time, but are by no means a comprehensive list. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to email us.

Sites on Islam and the Middle East

  • Outreach World This US Department of Education-funded site collects resources from all of the international education Title VI centers nationwide. Its searchable database (by region, grade level and topic) makes finding appropriate resources easy.
  • PBS Global Connections: The Middle East The Global Connections Middle East site (developed in consultation with The Outreach Center) integrates and contextualizes the rich body of public broadcasting resources to provide a global and historical perspective on the Middle East that will help teachers, students, and the general public explore and understand seminal events of national and international significance. A timeline offers a compendium of events across a range of themes over the past 100 years A series of "connecting questions" pose higher-level inquiries that cut across themes and time. For educators, each of the six connecting questions is accompanied by three activities. These are written for high school classrooms, but may be scaled up or down. Additionally, a section on multimedia will help both teachers new to multimedia and veteran users make more effective educational use of video and the Web.
  • Access Islam Funded by the US Dept. of Education, this site gives students and teachers access to Internet-based videos, lesson plans, and associated materials.
  • Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection One of the best on-line map collections of the Middle East with maps from various periods and in a number of styles.
  • AMIDEAST AMIDEAST is a private, nonprofit organization working to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the people of the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Arab American National Museum Based in Dearborn, MI, the Museum strives to foster a better understanding and appreciation for Arab and Arab American culture through education and presentation of the arts. With several partners including IBM, the Museum has developed an interactive, multimedia tour of Ancient Egypt for students and educators.
  • Islam website of Professor Alan Godlas of the Department of Religion at the University of Georgia. It is a thoughtful and comprehensive site dealing with many topics related to Islam and the Middle East, containing images, glossaries, etc.
  • Museum With No Frontiers: Discover Islamic Art A comprehensive visual tour of the development of Islamic art through the historical lens of dynasties and by way of topical areas such as women, water, pilgrimage, Arabic calligraphy, and figurative art.

Professional Development & Outreach Institutions
  • The Middle East Outreach Council (MEOC) works to increase public knowledge about the peoples, places, and cultures of the Middle East, including the Arab world, Israel, Iran, Turkey, and Afghanistan. PBS Global Connections, the Middle East.
  • The Children's Museum of Boston has interdisciplinary teaching kits on many world cultures available for educators to borrow. The Children’s Museum also offers excellent professional development for K-6 educators.
  • Primary Source is a nationally known non-profit center for the culturally inclusive multidisciplinary study of history and the humanities.
  • The Education Cooperative coordinates services including professional development for fourteen suburban school systems west of Boston; Educators for Social Responsibility (who develop curricula emphasizing social and emotional learning, character education, conflict resolution, violence prevention, and intergroup relations).
  • Media Education Foundation A nonprofit organization devoted to media research and the production of resources to aid educators and others in fostering analytical media literacy. Site houses numerous lesson plans and resources for educators on topics relevant to the media.
