- Harvard University Semitic Museum The Semitic Museum houses collections of archaeological materials from the Ancient Near East. Current exhibits explore everyday life in ancient Israel during the Iron Age; a 2nd millennium BCE Hurrian city, located in modern-day Iraq; and the history of ancient Cyprus through ceramics and metal objects. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
- Arab American National Museum Based in Dearborn, MI, the Museum strives
to foster a better understanding and appreciation for Arab and
Arab American culture through education and presentation of the
arts. With several partners including IBM, the Museum has
developed an interactive, multimedia tour of Ancient Egypt for students and educators.
- Museum With No Frontiers: Discover Islamic Art
A comprehensive visual tour of the development of Islamic art through
the historical lens of dynasties and by way of topical areas such as
women, water, pilgrimage, Arabic calligraphy, and figurative art.
- The Art of Ancient Egypt This web resource for educators, created by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, brings together selected works of art from the Museum's extensive Egyptian art collection. Through maps, pictures, lesson plans and activities, this resource explores ancient Egyptian art and its central role in Egyptian civilization.
- Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection One of the best on-line map collections of the Middle East with maps from various periods and in a number of styles.
- Understanding the Middle East through Geography and Demography This lesson plan, available from OutreachWorld.org, uses geography and demography to examine this important area. Students learn about the Middle East region by studying a sub-region in depth through small group, cooperative learning. Oil, natural gas, and water resources are examined through case study and map analysis, which enhances higher-level thinking skills as well as an appreciation of the differences and complexities within the entire area.
- Outreach World This US Department of Education-funded site collects resources from all
of the international education Title VI centers nationwide. Its
searchable database (by region, grade level and topic) makes finding
appropriate resources easy.
- PBS Global Connections: The Middle East
The Global Connections Middle East site (developed in consultation with
The Outreach Center) integrates and contextualizes the rich body of
public broadcasting resources to provide a global and historical
perspective on the Middle East that will help teachers, students, and
the general public explore and understand seminal events of national
and international significance. Information is written for high school
classrooms, but may be scaled up or down.
- Access Islam
Funded by the US Dept. of Education, this site gives students and
teachers access to Internet-based videos, lesson plans, and associated
materials.
- AMIDEAST
AMIDEAST is a private, nonprofit organization working to strengthen
mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the people
of the Middle East and North Africa.
- Islam website of Professor Alan Godlas This website, from Department of Religion at the University of Georgia, is a
thoughtful and comprehensive site dealing with many topics related to
Islam and the Middle East, containing images, glossaries, etc.
- Spices: Exotic Flavors & Medicines An online exhibit by UCLA's Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library which explores the many facets of spices, from their medicinal and culinary uses to their value over time and cultures. The exhibit defines what a spice is, why spices are important and a timeline outlines the history of spices. A table of spices with pictures is also included.
- The Middle East Outreach Council MEOC works to increase public knowledge about the peoples, places,
and cultures of the Middle East, including the Arab world, Israel,
Iran, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
- The Children's Museum of Boston The Children’s Museum offers excellent
professional development for K-6 educators and also has interdisciplinary teaching kits on many world cultures available for educators to borrow.
- Primary Source A nationally known non-profit center for the culturally inclusive multidisciplinary study of history and the humanities.
- The Education Cooperative
This organization coordinates services including professional development for fourteen
suburban school systems west of Boston; Educators for Social
Responsibility (who develop curricula emphasizing social and emotional
learning, character education, conflict resolution, violence
prevention, and intergroup relations).
- Media Education Foundation A nonprofit organization devoted to media research and the production of resources to aid educators and others in fostering analytical media literacy. Site houses numerous lesson plans and resources for educators on topics relevant to the media.
