Arabic in the Schools
Submitted by Jaclyn_michael on May 18, 2009 - 11:17am.

More and more public and private schools in New England are teaching Arabic as part of their foreign language options.  In addition to the Best Practices Workshop that the Outreach Center hosted in January, Paul Beran, Outreach Director, conducts in-class introductions to Arabic for teachers and students.

On Monday 11 May, he worked with Jim Carter’s class, an alumnus of the Egypt Forum program, of 34 7th and 8th graders at the Fenn School in Concord, MA. During the one-hour session, students learn the alphabet, write their name in Arabic and listen to secular and religious uses of Arabic.  The Arabic language is demystified and further study is encouraged through this short introduction.  Commenting on how the students remain engaged with the language, Carter revealed that, "I arrived this morning to all sorts of Arabic writing on my white board."  He continued, "all of them enjoyed [the] lesson, some of them absolutely loved it."

Please contact The Outreach Center if you would like to schedule an Arabic language introduction for your class.
