A one-day workshop for K-12 educators and the general public on approaches to including a human rights discussion in the classroom in the context of global education and topics related to the Middle East region and Islam/Muslim communities.

The workshop will take place in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), and will be held on the Harvard University campus. Note:  Teachers who participate in the workshop will be eligible for free admittance to the Middle East Studies Association and the Middle East Outreach Council, a group of educational institutions focused on assisting educators teaching on topics related to the Middle East region. The workshop is being organized with Yale University, Ohio State University and New York University.

The format of the workshop will combine both theoretical presentation and discussion with hands-on resources from a variety of academic, community and other local organizations that K-12 educators can use in their classrooms.

The workshop is open to 30 participants and costs $15, payable upon confirmation of acceptance of the online application [participants will receive a coffee break, lunch and a resource packet]. The participation fee is waived for pre-service teachers and students. 10 professional development points (PDS) are available through the Outreach Center at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies for successful completion of the workshop program, which includes attending the workshop and writing a two-page reflection on idea for integrating human rights into your current teaching.
