The Middle East: Between Progress & Conflict
Date: Thursday, November 8, 2007
Time: 08:30 AM - 06:00 PM

November 8, 2007
John F. Kennedy School of Government

We cordially invite you to the inaugural conference
between the Dubai Initiative, Belfer Center for Science
and International Affairs and the Dubai School of Government

The past five years in the Middle East have witnessed both notable economic
change and an unprecedented level of instability. These years have seen the
meteoric growth of Dubai as well as the conflicts in Iraq, Lebanon, and the
Palestinian territories. Iran's stand-off with both the U.S. and its Arab
neighbors has further shaped the region's recent history. This conference
will provide a framework for analyzing the divergent trends at play in the
Middle East for both academic discussion and policy creation. This
conference was conceptualized by Graham Allison, Director of the Belfer
Center, Professor Vali Nasr, Senior Fellow for the Dubai Initiative and
Professor Tarik Yousef, Dean of the Dubai School of Government. The
conference will feature the following panels:

Panel I: The Shifting Balance of Power
Panel II: The Challenge of Islamism
Panel III: Managing Ongoing Conflicts
Panel IV: Prospects for Economic Transformations
