Professional Development Points: Three graduate credits available
How can we come to see this region with greater clarity than our own preconceptions and the media's preoccupations generally allow? In this institute we will focus on factors at the center of Middle Eastern identities today, particularly the desires for political autonomy and cultural authenticity. We will examine the colonial legacies of WWI, the different roles and status of women, socio-political revolutions beginning during the Cold War, the Arab-Israeli conflict, issues of oil and water, and the rise of Islamist politics. We will also explore inter-ethnic relations and individuals' reflections on these themes through the arts.
Suitable especially for middle and high school teachers.
*Selected Faculty:* Ali Asani, Harvard University; Carol Saivetz, Harvard University; Betty Anderson, Boston University; Ali Banuazizi, Boston College; Barbara Petzen, Harvard University
NOTE: Content in this institute will be similar to last summer's "Unmuddling the Modern Middle East"
