Coro Allegro performs

SHOFAR

A call to worship, to personal awakening, to acknowledgement of human weakness, and a return to wholeness

by Robert Stern

- World Premiere -

On November 5, the Boston area will host the exciting world premiere of Shofar, a new oratorio by Robert Stern, professor emeritus of music at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Coro Allegro, Boston’s acclaimed chorus for members and friends of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, will perform this important addition to the repertoire of our time—a significant, large-scale work that presents Jewish preoccupations, but transcends its Jewish roots to address universal questions about the relationship of humankind and God.

The oratorio, scored for orchestra, soloists, and chorus, is based on the symbolism of the Shofar in Jewish history, liturgy and literature: a call to worship and to personal awakening. An internationally renowned composer, Robert Stern’s commissions include a piece for cello and piano, written for the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Tickets are $20, $32, and $48 with group, student and senior discounts available. For tickets or more information, call 617-236-4011.
