The Division of Languages & Literature at Bard College invites applications for a full-time tenure-line position in Arabic at the rank of assistant professor beginning fall 2010. The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. or be ABD. Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and English is required. Research specialization is open and could include modern Arab intellectual thought, classical or modern Arabic literary studies, linguistics, or cultural studies. Other specializations will be considered. Additional training in related fields such as social history, anthropology or film studies is desirable. The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in and enthusiasm for the communicative teaching of language. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to the growth of Arabic language studies, offer courses in his or her area of specialization, teach in First-Year Seminar, and if relevant the Literature and Comparative Literature programs, and have a strong interest in overseeing study-abroad programs, while also maintaining a vigorous commitment to scholarship.

It stands as a complement to Bard’s partnership with Al-Quds University through the Honors College for Liberal Arts and Sciences, located in East Jerusalem.

Preliminary interviews may be conducted at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association, November 21-24, 2009, in Boston. Please send letter of application, C.V., three letters of recommendation, teaching portfolio and a writing sample by electronic submission to hr-lnl09-082@bard.edu.
