The
Division of Languages & Literature at Bard College invites applications for
a full-time tenure-line position in Arabic at the rank of assistant professor
beginning fall 2010. The successful applicant must hold a Ph.D. or be ABD.
Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and English is required. Research
specialization is open and could include modern Arab intellectual thought,
classical or modern Arabic literary studies, linguistics, or cultural studies.
Other specializations will be considered. Additional training in related fields
such as social history, anthropology or film studies is desirable. The
candidate must have demonstrated excellence in and enthusiasm for the
communicative teaching of language. The successful applicant would be expected
to contribute to the growth of Arabic language studies, offer courses in his or
her area of specialization, teach in First-Year Seminar, and if relevant the
Literature and Comparative Literature programs, and have a strong interest in
overseeing study-abroad programs, while also maintaining a vigorous commitment
to scholarship.
Bard’s growing faculty in Middle Eastern studies reflects the College’s
commitment to scholarly inquiry and undergraduate teaching in the region. It
stands as a complement to Bard’s partnership with Al-Quds University through
the Honors College for Liberal Arts and Sciences, located in East Jerusalem.
