Outreach Director and Lexington Teacher Present on Islam-In-Context at New Hampshire Social Studies Conference
Submitted by ben_williams on November 2, 2009 - 2:07pm.

Over 70 educators from around New Hampshire were on hand for a presentation and discussion on approaches and resources for teaching about Islam and Muslim communities in the K-12 classroom by CMESOC director Paul Beran and Lexington High School History teacher Kristin Hayward Strobel. The presentation was at the annual conference of the New Hampshire Council For the Social Studies (NHCSS). The core points of the presentation were that framework standards (different for MA and NH) are important to guiding how topics concerning Islam and Muslim communities are taught. Cultural study approaches to teaching were considered and some classroom ready resources on Islamic Art from the Arab World, Ottoman Empire, and Afghanistan were presented for teaching consideration.
