This three-part two-day workshop [24 October / 14 November] will focus on approaches to using art and art objects to teach about religion and sacred space in the K-12 classroom.
Developed in conjunction with the Harvard Divinity School’s Program in Religious Studies and Education, the Harvard Art Museums, the Queen Rania Teacher Academy, Amman, Jordan; educators from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and the Peabody Museum at Harvard, the format will combine theoretical presentation and discussion of models for using art and religion in the classroom with hands-on work by participants using art objects and exhibitions on Sufism from the Harvard museums’ collections. Participants will be asked to attend art events of their choosing on campus or in their community as part of the workshop.
The workshop is open to 20 participants and costs $20, payable upon confirmation of acceptance of the online application. Participants will receive a textbook, reading primer, admission to the Harvard Art Museums, lunches and coffee breaks. One graduate teaching credit through Framingham State College ($65 per credit, paid by each participant) and 30 professional development points (PDS) through the Outreach Center at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies are being offered for successful completion of the workshop program.
