CMES Students and Alumni find Success in the Academic World

CMES alumni receiving degrees in 2007–2009 have been particularly successful in the academic job search and in the pursuit of further degrees.

Ahmed El Shamsy (PhD ’09) accepted a tenure-track position in Premodern North African History in the History Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Martin Ngyuen (PhD ’09) accepted a tenure-track position in Islamic Religious Traditions at Fairfield University.

Timothy Fitzgerald (PhD ’09) accepted a tenure-track position in the History Department at Rice University.

Ayfer Stump (PhD ’08) secured a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Cornell University in the Near Eastern Studies Department.

Etty Terem (PhD ’07) accepted a tenure-track position in the Department of History at Rhodes College.

Alex Winder (AM '09) will be continuing his education in pursuit of a PhD in History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at NYU.

Pouya Alimagham (AM ‘09) is continuing his education in pursuit of a PhD at the University of Michigan.

The success of current CMES students has also been noteworthy.

Alireza Doostdar (PhD Candidate in Middle Eastern Studies and Anthropology) was awarded funding for his dissertation research through the Wenner-Gren Foundation. His research topic is, "Sciences of the Strange and the Sociality of Science in Iran."

Chloe Safier (AM '10) will publish a book review of "American Muslim Women: Negotiating Race, Class and Gender within the Ummah" by Jamillah Karim in the Journal for Middle East Women's Studies 6:1 (Winter 2010).
