CMES Graduate Programs

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies supports several graduate degree programs within Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Committee on Middle Eastern Studies, which is composed of Center faculty and chaired by the Director, oversees and administers both the two-year program leading to the Master of Arts degree in Regional Studies - Middle East - and three formal joint PhD programs with the Departments of Anthropology, Fine Arts, and History.

Currently, over 20 AM students are engaged in varied courses of study leading to the master’s degree in Regional Studies - Middle East. Over 45 students are enrolled in our joint PhD programs in anthropology, history, or history of art and architecture. To view our Student Directory and individual student pages, click here.

Each degree has its own program of study, requirements and procedures. Students apply to one of these programs.

CMES encourages students to tailor programs to their individual interests. Graduates of our programs teach at major universities in the United States and abroad; others hold leadership positions in government, law, media, medicine, NGOs, the arts and business.

For detailed information about CMES graduate degrees and program requirements, please consult the program pages within this site and the CMES Program Descriptions on the GSAS website.
