On, Wednesday, September 12, begins a 4-day first-of-its-kindconference called Engaging Islam: Feminisms, Religiosities andSelf-Determinations on UMass Boston. Funded by a Ford Foundation grant, theconference features 10 internationally acclaimed keynote speakers and 20competitively selected panel presenters.A dominant image in the West about Islam is of a force particularlyoppressive to women. The year 2007 marks the 800th anniversary of the birth of Mevlana CelaleddinRumi, one of the most influential figures of Muslim mysticism (Sufism). Thisconcert explores the rich mix of creeds and cultures of 13th centuryAnatolia where Rumi spent most of his life through a wide range ofrepertoires: Turkish sufi music (Bektasi and Mevlevi), Byzantine (Greek-Orthodox) music, Jewish poetry with Turkish melodies, Turkish secular music,and music of the "Frenk"-European Crusaders and traders passing through theregion.
