Submission Guidelines

"e-cmes" is meant for a broad cross-section of people interested in Middle Eastern studies. As such, submitted articles should be accessible to a wide, but reasonably informed audience. Submissions will be accepted for potential publication from Harvard students, faculty, alumni/na, associates, staff, visiting scholars, and post-docs, as well as Middle Eastern Studies faculty and students from other universities and colleges. Submitting an article does not guarantee that it will be published. All submissions will be reviewed by one or more members of the editorial board for consideration. We will notify you if your article was accepted for publication.

All submissions or inquiries about submissions should be made via email to: bshughes@fas.harvard.edu. Your first article submission should be accompanied by a byline. Photos may be sent via email or on a CD. If you do not have the means to digitize your photographs, you may submit them by mail to:

Please note: Hard copies of photographs must be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelop with the appropriate postage for return mail if you wish to receive the photos back. They should also be clearly labeled (on the back of the photo) with your name and a caption.

Specific guidelines for each magazine section are outlined below. If you have further questions, please send an email to bshughes@fas.harvard.edu.

Features Articles:

  • Up to 2,000 words on any topic related to the Middle East, including profiles of Middle Eastern Studies faculty, students and scholars
  • Should include 1–3 photos (can be photo of author) no smaller than 600 x 450; please list captions for photos and denote within the text of the article where each photo should be placed; please also denote which photo should be used as a thumbnail image


Notes from the Field:

  • 400–1500 words
  • 0–5 photos (can be of author), no smaller than 600 x 450; please list captions for photos and denote within the text of the article where each photo should be placed; please also denote which photo should be used as a thumbnail image; if no photo is submitted, a standard graphic will be used as a thumbnail image


Reviews:

  • e-cmes will accept reviews of books, films, events (Harvard and non-Harvard) and restaurants
  • 400–1200 words


Photo Essays:

  • 10–30 photos
  • No smaller than 600 x 450 (.jpg preferred)
  • The introduction should be no longer than 400 words
  • Each photo should have a caption of no more than 50 words
  • Photos should be saved in the following format: “yourlastname01.jpg”, with the first photo numbered 01, the second 02 and so on.
  • Please submit the captions for your photos in the body of your email or within a document denoting which caption goes with which photo
