e-cmes is an online magazine published by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) at Harvard University. Our hope is to create a dynamic forum that reflects the diversity of interests, people and debates within the Middle Eastern studies community at Harvard and beyond, while simultaneously providing up-to-date information on CMES activities, people, and news. As such, the articles published here solely reflect the views of the authors, and should not be construed as representing the views of CMES or Harvard University. The editorial board will insist upon non-inflammatory language and reasoned debate, but will neither censor, nor favor, submissions on the basis of political viewpoints or perceived leanings. The magazine welcomes submissions from Harvard students, alumni/ae, faculty, staff, visiting scholars, post-docs, and associates, as well as Middle Eastern studies faculty and students from other universities.
e-cmes is maintained by an editorial board consisting of the following people:
- Summer Hughes, Editor
- Alireza Doostdar, Technical Advisor, and CMES Ph.D. Candidate (Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies)
- Susan Kahn, Associate Director of CMES, Editor of CMES Monograph Series
- Don Babai, Editor of the Harvard Middle Eastern and Islamic Review (HMEIR)
Comments, inquiries, questions, and suggestions should be submitted to Summer Hughes (
