Affiliation Distinctions

CMES offers four affiliation categories for potential visiting researchers: Visiting Scholar, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Visiting Fellow, and Special Student. If you are interested in applying for an affiliation with the Center, please see the descriptions below. The application requires that you select the appropriate affiliation.

PLEASE NOTE: None of these affiliations are paid fellowships. All applicants must find funding from some other source.

Visiting Scholar
Eligible applicants must have a PhD and, ordinarily, be on leave from a scholarly post elsewhere (exceptions to this rule are made, but require approval by the Dean's office). Individuals may serve in this category, whether full or part time, for a minimum of three months and no more than two years consecutively, but are eligible for reappointment after a lapse of years approximating that which separates sabbaticals. Visiting Scholars carry out their own work in association with a Center faculty sponsor or sponsors.

Visiting scholars are expected to deliver a lecture, a scholarly article, or a final report prior to departing from the post.

The application may be completed online or via the postal service. In either case, the application must include a curriculum vitae and a brief description of the project to be undertaken during the term for which the individual is applying, as well as the names and contact details of two referees. For further information please see Guidelines for Appointees.

Post-Doctoral Fellow
An individual who has received her or his doctoral degree within the last three years is eligible to apply for a Post-doctoral fellow's appointment to continue her or his studies under the general supervision of one or more Center faculty members. Individuals may serve in this category, whether full or part-time, for a minimum of three months; Post-doctoral Fellow appointments may be renewed up to a total of 36 months.

Post-Doctoral Fellows are expected to deliver a lecture, a scholarly article, or a final report prior to departing from the post.

The application may be completed online or via the postal service. In either case, the application must include a curriculum vitae and a brief description of the project to be undertaken during the term for which the individual is applying, as well as the names and contact details of two referees. For further information please see Guidelines for Appointees.

Visiting Fellow
Persons holding the doctoral degree (or its equivalent), or those with comparable professional experience, may apply for Visiting Fellow status within Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). This status is also open to advanced doctoral candidates who have completed all required course work and would like to pursue dissertation research at Harvard. Visiting Fellow appointments may be renewed for up to a total of 5 years.

Visiting Fellowships are arranged through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Visiting Fellow Program, or through a faculty sponsor. For further information please consult the GSAS Visiting Fellows Program site.

Special Student
Special Students bring a broad range of experiences and backgrounds to Harvard and their reasons for participating are similarly varied. Some students wish to strengthen their academic background before applying to graduate degree programs; others wish to change the focus of their studies and choose Special Student status as an opportunity to explore new disciplines. Special Student status is also appropriate for individuals seeking personal enrichment or career advancement.

Special Studentships are arranged through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Special Student Program, or through a faculty sponsor. For further information please consult the GSAS Special Students Program site.
