Welcome, Visiting Researchers!

We’ve developed this part of our web site just for you. Aside from the menu items on the left, we’ve collected some online resources we think will be of particular interest to you, including external links (outside the CMES website) that may be helpful to you as you get settled in the Boston area and at Harvard. You can find these to the right.

General Information

In the interest of promoting scholarly research and writing on all aspects of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies makes a small number of research appointments each year. Such appointments are made in alignment with the Center's current goals and research through the sponsorship of a primary faculty member.

The work of our affiliates covers a wide range of fields, including anthropology, religion, political science, economics, history and literature. Together they create a lively community that encourages interdisciplinary contact. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is not able to provide funding or office space for its affiliates. However, Center affiliation includes full access to Harvard Libraries and many other University facilities.

The intellectual life of the Center is greatly enriched by the active participation of its affiliates. Ordinarily, Center affiliates are expected to be involved in a clearly defined research project that draws upon Center and university resources, and to participate actively in Center colloquia and seminars. They are also expected to be in residence in the greater Boston area during the period of affiliation, which normally runs from September 1st to June 30th each year. At the end of the appointment, research affiliates are expected to deliver a report to the Director of CMES that details the work that was accomplished during the appointment.
