Teaching Fellowship Positions

Teaching Fellowships are understood to be a foundational part of your training as a doctoral student at Harvard.

Training in Language and Pedagogy

Incoming PhD students for whom English is not their first language may have to complete an ESL preparatory course in the summer prior to their first term.

All first-time Teaching Fellows (TFs) are expected to complete orientation sessions at the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning prior to their first TF appointment, typically in the fall semester of their third year.

Teaching and Development

All PhD students are expected to create a Teaching and Development dossier as soon as they receive their first assignment as a TF. In addition to tracking teaching positions held, the dossier can also be used to support applications for teaching jobs outside Harvard.

Each semester, five outstanding TFs will be eligible for a $1,000 award from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Outstanding Teaching Fellows are identified by superior Committee on Undergraduate Education (CUE) scores and candidates for the award must be supported by a letter from their department and one of their students.

Finding TF positions

While students enrolled in CMES joint PhD programs must find teaching positions, CMES does not coordinate Teaching Fellowships. Students must follow the TF application process in their home department to be considered for TF positions. The initial hiring of TFs, however, is carried out by course heads. It is up to each student to cultivate faculty patronage networks to secure TF positions for the academic year. Qualified CMES students have found TF positions in the departments of Economics, Government, History of Science, Study of Religion, and at the Law and Divinity Schools, as well as in their home departments. Since all such appointments are contingent upon enrollments, confirmation of appointment can only be made during the first few weeks of the course meeting.
