Welcome, Prospective Students!

Graduate Programs

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies coordinates four graduate degree programs:

The AM Program in Regional Studies — Middle East

The Joint Ph.D. Programs in Middle Eastern Studies and History, Anthropology, and History of Art and Architecture

We welcome applications from serious students with a demonstrated interest in Middle Eastern Studies. The GRE is required for all applicants. There is no minimum GRE score or GPA. We evaluate each application on its own terms, giving extra weight to those with prior language training in a Middle Eastern language, though prior language training is not a prerequisite to acceptance. Strong recommendations and a compelling statement of purpose are vital to a successful application.

Prospective students should read the program descriptions carefully before submitting their applications. These programs have specific strengths and prospective students should identify whether their own interests are compatible with those of their chosen program. For example, those with a particular interest in Islamic Studies may find the graduate programs at Harvard’s Divinity School more appropriate. Those with a specific interest in the languages and literatures of the Middle East may wish to explore the graduate programs offered through Harvard’s Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.

Please note that funding for AM students is extremely limited. Prospective AM students who are United States citizens or permanent residents should apply for FLAS funding with their applications, but unfortunately funding is extremely limited and awarded infrequently.

Those accepted to the Ph.D. programs can expect a full support package. Details are available on the GSAS Admissions website.

If you still have questions after reading carefully through the program and application information on the CMES and GSAS websites, please contact Susan Kahn at skahn@fas.harvard.edu

The deadline for admissions applications is December 31, 2009 for degree programs beginning in September 2010.
